I am a great fan of the new genre where the 'hero' of a serial show is actually an 'anti-hero'* - this came about firstly with many of the characters in '6 Feet Under', was brought into sharper focus by the brilliant 'Dexter', and now we have the likeable but mis-guided Nurse Jackie - her heart is in the right place, but the prescribed drugs are not in her patients!

I had not seen Edie Falco in a programme before but caught a few minutes of one episode live, and then the rather 'funky' details of this series persuaded me to buy the DVD set. Rich characterization abounds with formidable administrator Gloria gay, sensible Mohammad Eddie, dispenser of pills (etc.) garrulous and bumbling student Zoey handsome Dr. (Obnoxious patients receive rather less sympathy, she with ways and means of ensuring they show respect.) Jackie's concern is genuine, she instinctively knowing what best to say, what best to do. (All the while her scripts were consequently pared down, so many words not needed.)ĭeliberately the series focuses on nurses - they the front line of hospital care, the faces most seen by patients at often the most stressful time of their life. Falco knows the power of stillness, how so much can be portrayed by just a look, a gesture. Her secret is an addiction to drugs, intake increasing as crises multiply.Īs Nurse Jackie, Edie Falco is superb (she who so impressed as mobster Tony Soprano's wife). At the hectic New York hospital, she the rock on whom colleagues lean. At home, a devoted husband and two little girls.
